Quick answer

Yes, Australian businesses with bad credit can still borrow. Alternative lenders put more weight on what the business is doing now, such as bank statement turnover, property equity or contracts, than on a credit score. Unsecured options suit trading businesses with steady deposits; property-secured loans suit owners with equity. Funding is possible in as little as 24 hours once approved, for straightforward files.

Key points

  • A low score is a starting point for the conversation, not the end of it.
  • Alternative lenders look hardest at recent bank statements, equity and how the credit issue happened.
  • Property security can outweigh a poor credit file, from $20,000 up to $5,000,000.
  • Unsecured cash-flow lending, typically $5,000 to $500,000, depends on steady deposits.
  • There's no credit check when you first enquire with us.

Bad credit is the single most common reason people find us. Usually the story goes like this: the business is trading, the owner needs money for something sensible, and a computer at the bank looks at a number and says no before a human reads a word. That number doesn’t tell a lender whether you can repay. It tells them that something went wrong at some point. Alternative lenders are built to ask the next question: what went wrong, is it fixed, and what does the business look like today?

What counts as bad credit to a business lender?

“Bad credit” covers a wide range. Lenders sort it roughly like this, from easiest to hardest to fund:

What’s on the file How lenders tend to see it
Late payments on a card or phone bill Minor. Often ignored if recent statements are clean.
A low score from too many enquiries Fixable. Explain the enquiries and stop applying everywhere.
Paid defaults Workable with most alternative lenders, especially if older.
Unpaid defaults Harder. Lenders want to know why they’re still open.
Court judgments or writs Usually needs property security or a specialist lender.
A past bankruptcy or Part IX debt agreement Case by case. See our page on borrowing after bankruptcy.

Your personal file matters even when the loan is for a company, because most small business lenders ask directors for a personal guarantee. Under Australia’s credit reporting rules, defaults generally stay on a consumer report for five years from the date they’re listed, so an old mistake can follow you long after the business has recovered.

How do alternative lenders assess a bad credit file?

They look at the business first and the score second. The three things that move the decision:

  1. Bank statements. Six to twelve months of business statements show turnover, how often the balance dips, whether there are dishonours, and whether other lenders are already taking daily or weekly repayments.
  2. Security. Equity in a home or commercial property gives the lender a way out if things go wrong, which is why property-secured lending can look past serious credit damage.
  3. The story. A default from a divorce, an illness or a customer who went broke reads very differently to a pattern of not paying anyone. A short, honest explanation helps more than most owners expect.

Notice what’s missing: a polished business plan, three years of perfect financials, a relationship manager who has known you for a decade. Those matter at a bank. They matter much less here.

Which loan types work with bad credit?

  • Unsecured cash-flow loans. Sized on turnover, typically $5,000 to $500,000. Good for trading businesses with steady deposits. See unsecured business loans for bad credit.
  • Business lines of credit. A limit you draw on and repay as cash comes in, often approved on the same bank statement review. Read about lines of credit.
  • Caveat loans and private second mortgages. Secured on property equity, from $20,000 to $5,000,000, and the strongest option when credit is badly damaged. See caveat loans.
  • Equipment finance. The asset itself is the security, which makes some lenders comfortable with weaker credit.

Not sure which of these fits? The difficult loan matcher takes about a minute and shows which structures suit your mix of problems.

What will a bad credit loan cost?

We don’t publish rates, because every file is priced on its own circumstances and a number on a website would mislead more people than it helped. What we can say honestly: a weaker credit file usually costs more than a perfect one, terms are often shorter, and fees vary widely between lenders. The fix is to compare offers in total dollars, not headline numbers. Add up every fee and every repayment, and ask what it costs to pay the loan out early. Then plan an exit: many owners use an alternative loan for 6 to 24 months while their file heals, then refinance to something cheaper.

How to improve your chances before you apply

  • Pull your own credit reports from the bureaus (it’s free and doesn’t hurt your score) so nothing surprises you.
  • Get any paid defaults marked as paid, and query anything that looks wrong.
  • Stop applying everywhere. Each declined application can make the next one harder.
  • Have the last six months of business bank statements ready as PDFs.
  • Write two or three sentences on what caused the credit problem and what’s changed since.

See if you qualify

If the bank’s computer has already said no, you’re in the right place. Tell us what you need in about 60 seconds. There’s no credit check when you first enquire, your details aren’t passed around to a long list of lenders, and a real person who works on bad credit files every day will call you. Be upfront about the defaults or late payments on the form; the more accurate it is, the faster we can point you to a lender that’s likely to say yes. Start your enquiry here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business loan with a credit score under 500?

Often, yes. Some alternative lenders don't use a score cut-off at all and instead read the whole file: why the score dropped, whether the problem is settled or still running, and what the business banks each month. A lower score usually means a shorter term or security is needed, not an automatic no.

Will applying make my credit worse?

Every formal application can leave an enquiry on your file, and a cluster of them looks like desperation to the next lender. That's why we talk first with no credit check, work out which lender is most likely to approve, and only then make one targeted application.

Do I need property to borrow with bad credit?

Not always. A trading business with consistent deposits can qualify for an unsecured or line-of-credit facility. Property makes larger amounts and weaker credit files much easier to fund, and it's the main way past serious defaults or judgments.

How fast can a bad credit business loan settle?

For a straightforward file with documents ready, funding is possible in as little as 24 hours once approved. Files with property security take longer if a valuation or title work is needed, but private lenders can still move far quicker than a bank.

Is it better to repair my credit first?

If you have no deadline, cleaning up errors and paying overdue accounts helps. If the business needs money now, waiting can cost more than it saves. Many owners borrow now, keep repayments perfect, and refinance to a cheaper lender later.
